Is there a more perfectly flowing three legged table in the world? This elegant candle stand design that probably originated at the Mt. Lebanon NY Shaker village in the early 19th century is a good project for the hand tool wood worker with at least some experience. The patterns we will be using to create this table were made from one of three tables of this design that currently reside in the collection at Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield MA.

We will be making our tables from American cherry, same as the original. This class will require careful hand saw and chisel work to create the sliding dovetails that attach the legs to the spindle. You will also learn how to shape the legs, table top and top support with planes, spoke shaves and scrapers. Finish wood turning of the spindle will be covered as well.

We will also do some light metalwork in creating the metal “spider” that reinforces the leg joints, assuring a long life to your table.
