Full Description

This one day class will give students an opportunity for some hands-on, guided experience using bench planes.
◦ Learn to tune-up and set bench planes for successful use. We will primarily be using metal bodied planes, however wooden bodied planes are welcome
◦ Square a board – after students have tuned their planes we will learn how to square a board by creating a flat reference face, squaring one edge to become a reference edge, the proceed to plane the remaining edge and face to parallel, and square the ends
◦ Along the way we will discuss related useful techniques such as hand and body placement, how to avoid tear out on when planing end grain, using winding sticks, dealing with difficult grain, etc.
◦ If time permits, we may discuss simple edge dressings that can be applied with a simple smoothing plane such as chamfers and quarter rounds
