Full Description

Custom hand cut moldings will add an element of historic beauty to your furniture like nothing else. Students will learn how to layout and block in custom molding patterns, and will then cut the moldings and beads with complex and simple wooden molding planes, beading planes, and snipe’s-bill planes.

This workshop will follow the Making a Molding Plane workshop, but will be broader in scope. We will talk about the design of moldings and the types of profiles commonly encountered. We will learn how to layout molding profiles, and how to choose what planes to execute them. We will have hands-on practice in striking moldings both with dedicated molding planes (fixed profile) and also making moldings using a combination of hollows and rounds, moving filletsters, rabbets, side rabbets, snipes, side snipes, and left/right quarter rounds. This will be an intense introduction to the making of moldings.

Bill will provide highly-tuned antique molding planes for students to use. Students can also bring their own molding planes to get some tips on rehabbing them (if you’re serious about rehabbing wooden planes, then sign up for Bill’s class on “Restoring Wooden Handplanes“). If you can’t take this class, then check out our video class on this topic: "Choosing, Refurbishing and Using Moulding Planes with Bill Anderson".

Materials Fee & Required Tools

I will supply a wide selection of molding planes and hollows and rounds. These will all be sharp. If you bring planes to use, they should be sharp and proven. I will bring tools sufficient for limited degree of plane iron sharpening although this is not the aim of this particular workshop. There will be a material fee for handplaning stock. This is generally in the range of $25, depending on current market prices.

Class Policies, Liability Waiver, & Cancellations

No students under 18 years of age are allowed. A PDF document with the full class policies and a liability waiver will be available after you register. All students are required to sign this document, and bring it on the first day of class.

Anyone can cancel a class up to 3 weeks prior to the class for a full refund (minus a $45 fee that covers credit card processing fees and administrative work). Cancellations under three weeks before a class begins will be given a refund (less $45) if we can find someone else to fill the slot. If we have to cancel a class for an unforeseen emergency, inclement weather, instructor illness/injury, or low number of registrations, a full refund will be given to students. We encourage students to not book non-refundable flights, car rentals, or lodging in case of these cancelations.

Student Tool Discounts

After you’ve registered for a class, you are eligible for a discount from Lee Valley (Veritas) and Taylor Toolworks.
