Full Description

Join Mike Cundall for a three day green woodworking crash course! Over the three days, students will learn to use many different green woodworking hand tools, like an axe, a hatchet, a carving knife, a froe & mallet, a shaving horse, a spoon knife, a carving gouge, a spokeshave, and more. They'll use those tools to march out into the forest behind the school and harvest their own bowl & spoon blanks from fallen tulip poplar trees.

The class begins with making a chopping block out of a log, progresses to carving a wooden bowl, and finishes with carving a wooden spoon. Each section will focus on proper green wood selection, layout, stock preparation, and the safe and efficient use of the green woodworking tools. Most students should go home with a choping block, a wooden bowl, and a wooden spoon or spreader.

Stuents will learn the process of drying their wooden bowl and spoon when they return home, and the final finishing touches to make them ready for implementing in their home kitchens!

Class Syllabus

DAY 1: Students will learn about and try out the different green woodworking hand tools, and go out into the forest to cut their own lumber for their wooden bowl and wooden spoon. Students will work on making their chopping block.

DAY 2: Students will learn how to carve a wooden bowl, and will spend the day using various tools to split their wood, and turn it into a wooden bowl.

DAY 3: Students will finish up their bowl carving, and transition into carving a spoon or spreader.
