Students will learn wood carving fundamentals through some preliminary carving exercises, then move to carving a classic Philadelphia shell. This class is open to beginners, but will also be helpful to those with some more advanced carving experience. See required tools below.     CLASS LENGTH: 5 Days CLASS DESCRIPTION: Join Mike Cundall for a five day green woodworking course on carving traditional wooden spoons and wooden bowls from branches and logs. Students will learn how to turn branches & logs into lovely family heirlooms! The class begins with a tutorial on carving wooden spoons, and then moves into bowl carving. We will focus on green wood selection, layout, stock preparation, and the safe and efficient use of the axe, adze, and gouge. Students will have at least one spoon and a rough bowl by the end of the class that can, after drying at home, be turned into a useful bowl. See below for class details.     CLASS LENGTH: 1 Day CLASS DESCRIPTION: Spend a day with Joshua Farnsworth, building a pair of saw benches that are functional enough for everyday hand sawing, but strong enough to hold very heavy timber, including large slabs for workbench building. Many of the workbenches in the school were built on these indispensable saw benches! Students will learn to layout and cut the mystical sliding dovetail joint on beefy splayed timber legs with marking gauges, hand saws, and chisels. Students will learn how to turn branches & blanks into spoons & spreaders (for butter or jam) that they can use at home or give as gifts! The class will cover blank prep, axe, and knife use/safety, and how to design wooden spoons with the user in mind. Students will leave with a knowledge of how to work the raw materials to a roughed state, and then be guided on how to "finish" carve the wooden spoons and apply a suitable finish. The design of this chair has been simplified for students of all skill levels. Students will use a mixture of hand tools and power tools to build a dining chair of their own, which they should be able to replicate for a full set in their home workshop.
