Students will then use hand saws, handplanes, and gauges to dimension a board, followed by learning to cut a variety of wood joints, including dovetails, mortise & tenon, tongue & groove, rabbets, dado, grooves, and whatever other useful joints time allows. See below for class details. It's design is based on antique footstools found at the Old Salem Moravian settlement. But this isn't just any footstool. Students will learn how to turn branches & logs into lovely family heirlooms! The class begins with a brief tutorial on spoons, and then quickly moves into bowl carving. We will focus on layout, stock preparation, and the safe and efficient use of the axe, adze, and gouge. Students will have a rough bowl by the end of the class that can, after drying, be turned into a useful bowl. See below for class details. Students will learn how to turn branches & blanks into spoons that they can use at home or give as gifts! The class will cover blank prep, axe, and knife use/safety, and how to design spoons with the user in mind.
